Reflections of Life…...
Every aspect of life around us mirrors the truths of life. To discover these truths we simply have to look beyond the illusionary surface of all we imagine we see before our eyes. Every aspect of life is a teacher which offers us lessons directly from the Creator of life.
These disguised lessons once unmasked serve us by offering us an understand life which enables us to live life to the optimum knowing full well the meaning of life and our own individual purpose in life! Pomegranates offered me one of the greatest reflections of life.
Below is the amazing reflection of life I received from one single pomegranate as we shared time alone in my kitchen during the middle of the night!
POMEGRANATES
Lately I’ve been waking up around 3am and on many of these occasions I just cannot go back to sleep. This morning was one of those 3am days when further sleep eluded me, and as today was the first day of the weekend I did have to question why I was woken at that ‘ungodly’ hour! People often refer to time frames that are out of the ordinary as being ‘ungodly’. Yet I have to wonder if they really are ‘ungodly’?
I think not! In fact I think they are the complete opposite, and have thought this for quite some time. I have come to the conclusion that at that time of the day in the evident stillness and silence that God is most definitely trying to impart a specific message to me! When I ask, (for I always ask because asking is necessary if I hope to receive and answer) what it may be I generally get lead to some new understanding of life or guidance as to how I should proceed in a given situation. This morning in my asking I was led to the kitchen.
Now house work is not my idea of what I should be doing at 3am however that is exactly what I did do! Initially I decided to merely empty the refrigerator to let it defrost; intending to clean it later in the morning as I hadn’t quite surrendered to the idea that my night’s sleep was over! Then as I was emptying the fridge I was inspired to start cooking, and these days I definitely need to be inspired to cook anything more than a cheese sandwich; so this had to be God at work! While my various dishes were in the process of cooking I decided to seed a few pomegranates. In Australia I never had the patience to seed a pomegranate but here I have become a real pomegranate fan and have found the resulting taste treat to be well worth the effort! I’ve since become quite skilled at the procedure and also quite proud of myself for developing this new level of patience.
This morning’s seeding process seeded more than the pomegranates or rumaan as they are know in Egypt. This morning as I seeded my pomegranates’ in an almost meditative state I got shown a lesson I’d previously missed! I realised as I focused on the glistening colourful seeds just how truly beautiful they are as I studied the depth and magnificence of their unified gleaming rich colour. One seed alone is of course beautiful but nowhere near as beautiful as the seeds are collectively! Then I considered the taste of one seed alone.
It is difficult to distinguish fully its distinctiveness but grouped together a mouthful of seeds lets me taste the full impact of the flavour recognised as pomegranate and it is simply delicious! All seeds are individual and each have with their own uniqueness but it is only in the whole or connectedness of their being that their combined beauty and distinctive flavor may be fully experienced. The outer skin of a pomegranate is quite dull and cracked; in fact it could never be classed as beautiful.
It’s not ugly but it needs superficial enhancement to even shine; yet inside the pomegranate when you have the patience to seek out its seeds then, only then do you receive the treasure the pomegranate was created to offer! The treasure isn’t held on the outside; it’s on the inside! The outside of any living thing only has a short life span of purpose and once any outside has served its purpose it is discarded because it has no more purpose.
The inside on the other hand continues its purpose even after it can no longer be seen! The gift is on the inside and the gift given from the inside knows its true purpose and simply keeps on giving! Furthermore over time I’ve learnt not to waste any of the pomegranate seeds.
I used to wonder why I bothered trying to salvage an odd seed or two when my bowl was full and there were only a few more seeds to harvest! I knew I would never notice if a few seeds were missing when the time came to either eat or juice my seeds, but sub-consciously I must have known that wasting the seeds meant that they would have grown in vain! Every seed had come into being with a specific purpose and not one seed deserved to be treated with indifference or overlooked! Then the clearer connection between humanity and the pomegranate hit me; it was an epiphany, or as we say a ‘Light Bulb Moment’! God woke me at 3am and led me to the kitchen to paint me a perfect example of both humans as individuals and humanity as a whole in the form of a pomegranate! There is not one person or seed created without purpose.
And just as no seed deserves to be treated with indifference or overlooked neither does any human being deserve to be treated with indifference or overlooked. Let’s consider more deeply the comparison of a person to a pomegranate. Most people need a little outer work to enhance their natural beauty if they hope to meet today’s standards of beauty! We are all a little dulled and cracked on our exterior when we let the seasons or moods of our hectic life styles emotionally attack us and therefore we tend to age, dull and crack just like the pomegranate skin! To discovering the inner delights and beauty of a pomegranate requires an initial incision followed by focused patience. If focus isn’t given to seeding a pomegranate then its seeds are wounded and its juice splattered about haphazardly.
Furthermore if constant care isn’t given while seeding takes place then segments of separating membrane skin tend to get mixed in with seeds which taint their pure essence, light, beauty and taste. People also have an inner essence and beauty which needs to be seeded.
There is not one person on this earth who does not have inner beauty and a specific purpose for being alive. If God gives a pomegranate a specific purpose together with shimmering light and beauty then He most assuredly gives this to a person! Unfortunately humans regularly bury their inner beauty and essence beneath emotional wounds which they try to hide beneath a tough outer exterior.
This is why they try to disguise it with outer fineries! People hope in their attempts of outer beautification to disguise their inner pain and torment from others. But what they also unwittingly accomplish in focusing on the art of disguise is deny the harsh reality of inner pain and suffering to themselves!
